Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of six weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on physical fitnes and motor preparedness in male futsal-player student-teachers at Farhangian University.
Methodology: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and a control group. Thirty male futsal-player student-teachers (with at least two years of experience) were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=15) and a control group (n=15). The experimental group performed a HIIT protocol consisting of 30 seconds of maximal activity followed by 30 seconds of active recovery for six weeks (18 sessions, three sessions per week). Pretest and posttest measurements included VO₂max (Beep test), anaerobic explosive power (Sargent jump test), speed (20-meter sprint), agility (Illinois agility test), dynamic balance (Y-Balance test), and leg explosive power (squat jump). Data were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests.
Findings: The results demonstrated that six weeks of HIIT led to significant improvements in VO₂max (P<0.01), anaerobic explosive power (4.6 cm increase, P<0.01), a 0.24-second reduction in 20-meter sprint time (P<0.01), a 1.37-second reduction in Illinois agility test time (P<0.01), a 6.2-point improvement in dynamic balance (P<0.01), and a 4.4 cm increase in leg explosive power (P<0.01). Effect sizes ranged from moderate to large (d=0.51-0.84).
Conclusion: Six weeks of HIIT is an efficient and time-effective method for simultaneously improving physical fitness and motor preparedness in futsal-player student-teachers. Given the time constraints of this population, it can be incorporated into physical preparation and educational programs
