Objective: Regular physical activity is essential for improving physical health and motor performance in incarcerated women. This study investigated the effects of eight weeks of aerobic and Pilates training on lower-limb explosive power, speed and agility, static balance, and core muscle endurance in female prisoners in Qom Province.
Methods: This semi-experimental study used a pretest–posttest design with a control group. Thirty female prisoners volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to aerobic training (n=10), Pilates training (n=10), or control (n=10). Lower-limb explosive power, speed and agility, static balance, and core muscle endurance were assessed using the vertical jump, 4×9 m shuttle run, stork stand, and plank tests before and after the intervention. The experimental groups completed supervised training for eight weeks, three sessions per week, with each session lasting 120 minutes. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance and analysis of covariance at P ≤ 0.05.
Results: After controlling for baseline values, significant differences were found among the groups in all outcome measures. Aerobic training produced greater improvements in lower-limb explosive power and speed and agility, whereas Pilates training resulted in superior improvements in static balance. Both exercise programs significantly increased core muscle endurance.
Conclusion: Both aerobic and Pilates training effectively improved motor fitness in incarcerated women. Aerobic training was more effective for enhancing explosive power and speed, while Pilates training showed greater benefits for static balance. These exercise programs may be recommended to promote physical health and motor performance in correctional and rehabilitation settings.
