Abstract
Ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries of the lower extremities among athletes and accounts for more than 40% of sports injuries. Many individuals with recurrent ankle sprains develop chronic ankle instability, and if this injury is not properly treated, it can lead to deficits in range of motion, balance, strength, and functional performance. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of 8 weeks of Reactive Neuromuscular Training (RNT) on core stability in volleyball players with ankle instability.
Methods:
This study was a quasi-experimental research with a pre-test–post-test design, including an experimental group and a control group. The statistical population consisted of female volleyball players from the Qom amateur leagues who had ankle instability. A total of 30 participants were selected and randomly divided into two groups: 15 in the control group and 15 in the experimental group. The training program was performed three sessions per week for 45 minutes. Core stability was assessed using the plank test in both the pre-test and post-test.
Results:
The results showed that RNT exercises caused a significant improvement in core stability (P ≤ 0.001) in the experimental group.
Conclusion:
Eight weeks of RNT exercises improved core stability in athletes with chronic ankle instability. Therefore, the use of this training protocol is recommended in the rehabilitation process of these individuals.
Keywords:
