Background and Purpose: Functional tests such the figure-of-eight hop test, side to side hop, square hop test, and cross-over hop for distance are specifically designed to assess complex motor skills that are frequently required in volleyball competitions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of an integrated mindfulness and breathing exercise program on selected performance metrics in volleyball players.
Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental study. A total of 30 volleyball players were selected using purposeful sampling and randomly divided into two experimental and control groups of 30 participants each. Data were collected using the figure-of-eight hop test, side to side hop, square hop test, and cross-over hop for distance. Participants received breathing focus and mindfulness training for 8 sessions, three times a week. The Shapiro-Wilk test and repeated measures analysis of variance were used for data analysis (P<0.05).
Findings: The results of repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the figure-of-eight hop test (P<0.05), side to side hop (P<0.05), square hop test (P<0.05), and cross-over hop for distance (P<0.05), improved significantly after the breathing focus and mindfulness training protocol compared to pre-test (before the intervention).
Conclusion: Breathing focus and mindfulness training can lead to significant improvements in the figure-of-eight hop test, side to side hop, square hop test, and cross-over hop for distance, in volleyball players.
