Background and Aims: Exercise during adolescence plays a fundamental role in the formation of identity and meaning in life, and the occurrence of sports injuries can disrupt this meaning. The present study aimed to examine the effect of emotion-focused intervention Based on Emotion Regulation Training on the Search for Meaning in Life among Injured Adolescent Athletes.
Materials and Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental with three stages of measurement: pre-test, post-test, and follow-up, along with a control group. The statistical population consisted of 50 injured adolescent athletes who visited a sports treatment center in Lorestan province in 2024. Among them, 45 were selected by convenience sampling and randomly assigned into two experimental groups (15 boys and 15 girls) and one control group (15 participants). The research instrument was the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ). The experimental groups received 10 sessions of 30-minute emotion-focused therapy. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, repeated-measures ANOVA, and the Bonferroni post hoc test. The significance level was set at less than 0.05. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.
Results: The ANOVA results showed that emotion-focused therapy significantly increased the search for meaning (p < 0.01). Also, no significant difference was observed between boys and girls, and the results were maintained at follow-up.
Conclusion: Emotion-focused therapy can help reconstruct meaning in the lives of injured adolescent athletes.
