Background and Objective: Myokines are molecules produced and secreted by skeletal muscles. These molecules can act in a paracrine and endocrine manner, altering the physiological functions of target tissues. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of 12 weeks of resistance training on serum levels of myonectin and FGF-21 in inactive middle-aged men and women. Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 40 middle-aged men and women from Arak city (20 men with an average age of 38.27 ± 6.02 years, and 20 women with an average age of 38.31 ± 1.12 years,) were selected and randomly assigned to two groups: resistance training (20 participants (10 men and 10 women)) and control (20 participants (10 men and 10 women)). The training group performed resistance exercises for 12 weeks, 3 sessions per week, at an intensity of 65 to 80% of maximum strength. After confirming the normality of the data, paired t-test and independent t-test were used for data analysis at a significance level of less than 0.05. Ethical Considerations: Results: The serum level of myonectin in men in the resistance training group showed a significant increase compared to women in the resistance training group (P = 0.002).The serum level of FGF-21 in men in the resistance training group increased compared to women.(P = 0.005). . Conclusion: Possible mechanisms for the increase in serum levels of myonectin and FGF-21 in men compared to women may include hormonal characteristics and the larger volume of skeletal muscles in men.
