Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 4 weeks of non-exercise followed by 3 months of aerobic exercise on serum levels of TNF-α and insulin resistance in men with type 2 diabetes.
Method: The statistical sample of this research consisted of 24 men aged 30 to 40 with type 2 diabetes and a body mass index of 30 to 34. They were voluntarily selected and randomly divided into two groups: a control group (12 individuals) and an experimental group (12 individuals). Over a period of 12 weeks, the experimental group engaged in three sessions of aerobic training per week. The exercises began at 55% of maximum intensity and by the end of the eighth week,
the intensity had increased to 75%. Anthropometric indicators were measured 48 hours before
and after the research implementation, and after 4 weeks of non-exercise. Additionally, TNF-α, glucose, and insulin resistance were measured in both groups after fasting for 12 hours, with 4 cc of blood drawn. Data analysis involved using an independent t-test and repeated analysis of variance with LSD post hoc test to examine inter-group and intra-group changes. The significance level was set at p<0.05%, and data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 22 software.
Findings: The results showed that 12 weeks of aerobic training caused a significant decrease in serum levels of TNF-α (P=0.013), fasting glucose (P=0.000), and insulin resistance (P=0.013)
in the experimental group, and these changes were maintained after 4 weeks of non-training. Anthropometric indices such as body weight (P=0.000), body mass (P=0.000), and body fat percentage (P=0.000) decreased after 12 weeks of aerobic training, and these values were maintained after 4 weeks of non-training.
Conclusion: Three months of aerobic exercise improved TNF-α levels, fasting glucose, and insulin resistance, as well as significantly reduced anthropometric indices in men with type 2 diabetes. The levels of these variables remained significantly lower than the baseline levels after four weeks of not training.
